a next-gen third space
A new third space is coming soon to Crown Heights, Brooklyn! Meet Kizuna, a Japanese & Hawaiian inspired cafe and event space dedicated to helping you build community through shared interests and experiences. Our offerings center social connection, joy, play, and presence so you can live a happier, healthier, fuller life.
The Japanese word kizuna (絆) means the enduring bonds between people, or the close relationships that are formed through mutual trust and support. Our name is a nod to our mission to help people live happier, healthier lives through the power of social connection and community bonds.
Our Story
Hi! 👋 I’m Megan, founder of Kizuna, an idea that was born out of my own desire to find a space where I could build community & make new friends as an adult (a strangely tricky thing to do!). I also wanted to find ways to add more fun & joyful practices that would combat the intense burnout that I’ve experienced through different seasons of life.
As I talked to others, I realized I wasn’t alone in my challenges expanding my community, in my feelings of burnout, or in my desire for more joy in the face of the world as it currently exists. In fact, according to a Harvard study 61% of young adults feel serious loneliness and a 2023 Deloitte study found that 77% of workers have experienced burnout.
So I decided to take my decade plus of marketing, event, hospitality, & community building experience (which was previously used to drive B2B sales) to instead drive joy and social connection - things we could all use more of!
In the future as we grow, we will open additional intentional third spaces in other cities and host retreats & group trips world wide to bring as much joy and IRL connection to as many people as possible. But for now, we are starting in the heart of Brooklyn, NY with our all-day cafe located at 84 Rogers Ave in Crown Heights where we’ll serve up joy in the form of community focused events and a menu of delicious drinks, light bites & sweet treats inspired by Hawaiian & Japanese flavors of my childhood.

What is a next-gen third space?
Third spaces, a term coined by Sociologist Ray Oldenburg, are where people gather & connect, outside of their homes (1st place) and work (2nd place). Many traditional third spaces have been lost to digital spaces in recent years. Though these digital spaces allow us to connect with others like never before, loneliness is at an all time high.
Today, there’s a growing movement to bring third spaces back in new, intentional ways. Kizuna is proud to be part of the next generation of third spaces - here to bring more joy, play, and meaningful, IRL connection to a world that deeply needs it.
